How enzymes support your digestion

We’ve all been there… when it comes to our own digestion, we often avoid the subject because it’s considered distasteful. Yet our digestion is incredibly important for our general well-being.

But what produces good digestion? Although there are countless factors involved, digestive enzymes play a special key role. So let’s take a closer look at these tiny molecules. Model hält ein Glas Wasser und führt eine Kapsel der RINGANA CAPS zum Mund.

What’s the connection between enzymes & digestion?

Enzymes are protein molecules that speed up biochemical reactions in the body. They do that by breaking down food into smaller parts that our body can then absorb and use. Here are some of the important digestive enzymes and what they do:

Amylase:
What it does: Amylase breaks down carbohydrates such as we find in bread, rice or potatoes into smaller sugar molecules (simple sugar).
Why it’s important: Thanks to amylase, our body can use the energy contained in the food. A lack of amylase may mean that we can’t digest carbohydrates properly.

Protease:
What it does: Protease splits proteins into smaller components.
Why it’s important: These building blocks are important for building and repairing muscles and other tissue.

Lipase:
What it does: Lipase splits the fats in food into fatty acids.
Why it’s important: Without lipase our bodies cannot make proper use of the fats that we need for energy and cell function.

Lactase:
What it does: Lactase helps us to digest the milk sugar (lactose) in milk and dairy products.
Why it’s important: If we don’t get enough lactase, milk sugar cannot be broken down fully and absorbed which may lead to a lactose intolerance.

Cellulases:
What they do: Cellulases are enzymes that break down cellulose (the main component in the cell walls of fruit, vegetables and cereals).
Why they’re important: The human digestive system cannot break down cellulose. This means that gases can build, leading to flatulence. Cellulases promote the breakdown of cellulose into easily absorbable sugar (glucose).

Thanks to these enzymes, our body can break down the food that we eat into usable components, and absorb it. That’s why good enzyme function is essential to our well-being.

How can I positively influence enzyme function?

There are couple of things you can do to keep your digestive enzymes up to speed. Here are a few tips:

Protein-rich food: An adequate intake of protein is important because amino acids are the building blocks for enzymes.

Raw foods: Raw fruit and veg contain natural enzymes. Try eating papaya or pineapple. If you want something less exotic, pears and figs also contain lots of enzymes.

Drink enough water and eat water-rich foods such as cucumber and melon. Dehydration impairs your bodily functions and digestion, so it’s important to drink enough fluids.

Fermented foods: Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi contain good bacteria that promote gut health and can support the enzymes.

Regular meal times: Ensure that you eat regularly and don’t skip any meals, so that your enzymes stay active and efficient.

    Extra support: CAPS d-gest

In our hectic daily lives, it can be a big challenge to follow through on all the nutritional tips we get. Quick snacks, coffee or a glass of wine after a long day can all put pressure on our digestive system. This is where food supplements with special enzyme complexes can offer valuable support.

CAPS d-gest can support you in these situations. These capsules contain a vegan fermented enzyme complex that takes in the five most important digestive enzymes: amylase, lactase, protease, cellulase and lipase. This smart enzyme mix can even help to break down foods that are hard to digest. In addition, the fermentation process increases the bioavailability of the enzymes so that the body can absorb them more efficiently.

But that’s not all! CAPS d-gest contain even more hero ingredients such as fermented ginger extract, artichoke leaf and inflorescence extract, and choline. These natural helpers work in synergy, and deliver the support you need for an all-round good gut feeling.
